Chair Yoga at Work: 7 Easy Poses to Relieve Desk Stress

Chair Yoga at Work- 7 Easy Poses to Relieve Desk Stressy

In the modern-day busy workplace, office employees sometimes spend days sitting in front of computers, glued to their screens and fighting short deadlines.

Such a sedentary lifestyle may cause physical pains and stiffness (neck stiffness, back pain, tight hips), mental fatigue, stress, and decreased productivity.

Luckily, practicing chair yoga at work provides an efficient, convenient method of fighting these issues without having to leave your office.

The relaxing routine presented in this YouTube video by Hye Yeon Lee, the founder of PagodaYoga, proves that chair yoga can become a part of your everyday working routine.

This article includes a chair yoga sequences for office workers that has seven simple chair yoga poses for office workers that provide relief to desk stress, improve posture, and increase energy.

The Growing Need for Workplace Wellness

Long hours sitting is a feature of the modern office, and it has severe health implications. Research indicates that prolonged sitting can lead to muscular and skeletal problems, poor circulation, and even mental disorders such as anxiety and burnout.

For the most part, desk workers are unable to avoid these problems as they are made worse by repetitive tasks such as typing, which exerts pressure on the wrists, shoulders, and neck.

Chair yoga is a solution to this problem because it is a low-impact method to stretch, strengthen, and relax the body when sitting.

Unlike conventional yoga, which might need a mat and a lot of space, chair yoga can be used in cramped offices and is therefore suitable for the busy professional.

By incorporating chair yoga into your routine, you can undo the harm of desk work and create a healthier and more balanced regimen.

The benefits of chair yoga for office workers are greater than just physical relief. Practice can make one sharper mentally, less stressed, and more productive at work.

Hye Yeon Lee is a certified yoga teacher and wellness coach who focuses on the concept of accessibility in her PagodaYoga classes, making them available to people of any age, fitness level, and experience, and allowing them to feel the transformative effects of chair yoga at work.

This sequence is ideal whether you are a beginner or an experienced yoga practitioner because it will make you feel rejuvenated and centered.

Why Chair Yoga for Desk Workers?

  • Stress and Anxiety Relief: The slow movements coupled with focused breathing are relaxing on the nervous system and help to relieve stress and anxiety in the workplace.

  • Increased Flexibility and Mobility: Stretching muscles in the neck, shoulders, back, and hips enhances flexibility, mobility, and joint health.
  • Increased Concentration and Vitality: Short yoga sessions increase blood flow to replenish your mental acuity and energy.

7 Easy Chair Yoga Poses for Office Workers

These chair yoga sequences are suitable for a beginner, can be practiced in 5-10 minutes, and can be done at the workplace, without attracting attention. Based on the PagodaYoga video by Hye Yeon Lee, these poses help to relax the parts of the body that are stressed during work at the desk.

Use a steady chair that can be locked in position (if necessary), sit towards the front edge of the chair, and keep feet hip-distance apart unless otherwise directed.

Detailed instructions for each pose, modifications, and benefits are given below.

1. Seated Mountain with Stretch Overhead

This foundational pose extends the spine and opens the shoulders, and establishes the tone of your practice.

How to Do It: Sit up straight with your feet pressed down into the ground, with your hands resting on your thighs. Breathe in, reach your arms up and lock your hands together, and push your palms towards the ceiling. Engage through your core to make your sit bones rooted. Stay in this position 2-3 breaths, then release your arms. Do this 3 times with a focus on lengthening your spine with each lift.

Modifications: In case of shoulder mobility issues, do not interlace fingers, but keep your arms parallel.

Benefits: Helps with posture, energizing, and stretching the upper back and shoulders.

2. Shoulder Rolls and Neck Release

This easy movement removes the stress built up from typing or hunching.

How to Do It: Sit up, with hands at rest on the chair or armrests. Move your shoulders forward in circles in 5 rounds and then in reverse 5 rounds. Now, rotate your head in circles, 3 times clockwise and 3 times in a counterclockwise direction, without lifting the shoulders close to your ears.

Adjustments: Limit the range of motion in case you experience strain in the neck.

Benefits: Helps increase circulation, reduce neck and shoulder tension, and relax.

3. Seated Spinal Twist

This twist improves the mobility of the spine and relieves mid-back tension that is prevalent in the office environment.

How to Do It: Sit up straight, reach the arms over the head, and clasp the hands. Inhale to make your spine longer; exhale, twist to the left, with the right hand on the left thigh, left hand on the back of the chair. Look to the left shoulder and hold 3 breaths. Back to the center, and repeat on the right.

Modifications: Place hands on thighs in case twisting is too intense.

Benefits: Activates digestion, alleviates tightness in the mid-back, and makes the spine more supple.

4. Seated Chest Opener

This pose reverses the forward slump that is caused by sitting at the desk, opening the chest and shoulders.

How To Do It: Grab a chair and hold the backrest or the sides and sit up straight and push your chest forward, and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold your shoulders down and not close to your ears. Hold it for 4 breaths, breathing deeply to expand your chest.

Variations: Put hands on thighs and concentrate on lifting the chest when it is difficult to reach back.

Benefits: Strengthens posture, stretches the chest muscles, and improves the ability to breathe.

5. Seated Side Stretch

This stretch lengthens the side body, relieving tension from prolonged sitting.

How to Do It: Sit up straight with arms straight out in a T-shape. Exhale, bring your right hand to your left thigh, and lean to the right as you extend your left arm over your head. Have your sit bones down. Hold for 3 breaths, keep your eyes upwards, as long as you can. Bring back to the centre, repeat on the left.

Adjustments: Hold the arms at the shoulder level when it is not easy to stretch them overhead.

Benefits: Stretches the obliques and increases lateral flexibility, and decreases tension in the sides of the body.

6. Chair Pigeon with Forward Fold

This pose stretches the hips and the lower back, which are usually tight in office workers.

How to Do It: Sit up straight, place your right ankle over your left thigh, and bend your right foot to cushion the knee. Place your right thigh in the air, inhale to extend, and exhale, hinge forward, toward your thigh. Breathe in and hold 3-5 breaths. A variation on this is to hold the chair with your right hand, the left behind you, and twist right and look over your shoulder. On the left, repeat.

Modifications: Keep the spine straight when forward bending is intense.

Benefits: Relieves hip and lower back strain, enhances circulation, and relaxes the mind.

7. Seated Forward Fold with Leg Extension

This pose stretches both hamstrings and relaxes the body, which is ideal as a wind-down pose.

How To Do It: Sit back a little, and bring your right knee close to your chest. Bendable, straighten your right leg, grasping your thigh or ankle, with the foot flexed. Hold for 3 breaths, then lean forward with arms and head hanging heavy for 3 breaths. Repeat on the left. Finish by stretching both legs out in front of you and rotating ankles 3 times each way to relieve strain.

Modifications: Bend the knee in case it is difficult to straighten the leg.

Benefits: Hamstring stretch, body relaxation, and mental relaxation.
